South African singer-songwriter Basson Laas returns with his inspiring new single, Every River, a moving reflection on perseverance, hope and finding purpose through life’s winding path. Releasing today, the single marks another significant milestone for the rising independent artist ahead of his forthcoming EP, Man the Fields.
Rooted in folk, pop and alternative influences, Every River transforms life’s uncertainties into a powerful metaphor. Like a river carving its way through the landscape, the song explores how growth rarely follows a straight line, but is instead shaped by patience, resilience and the courage to keep moving forward.
“This song was written as a realisation that achievement or success, whatever your definition of it may be, is likely to come only after long-term personal growth and patience,” says Basson. “A river starts small, follows a winding path, pushes through obstacles and grows stronger with every challenge. That’s the journey I wanted this song to capture.”
The single was recorded after Basson and his band won ConXion Studios’ Battle of the Bands in Pretoria in October 2025, earning studio time as part of the prize. Produced by Ruan Graaff, the recording was intentionally kept honest and organic, preserving the chemistry the trio had developed through performing the song live.
“We wanted it to sound exactly like the song people experience at our shows,” Basson explains. “We kept many of the original performances because they captured the emotion we were looking for. Authenticity was always more important than perfection.”
Growing up on a South African farm, Basson developed an appreciation for storytelling and life’s quieter moments. After teaching himself guitar at the age of 14, songwriting became his creative outlet, eventually leading him to pursue music professionally in 2022. Since releasing his debut EP, Good Morning Dreamer, in 2023, he has steadily built a catalogue of deeply personal songs that resonate through their honesty and emotional warmth.
Joined by drummer Jan-Hendrik Labuschagne and bassist/keyboardist Callie van der Merwe, Basson’s live performances continue to connect with audiences through their sincerity and heartfelt delivery, while his cinematic approach to music videos has further expanded the stories behind songs such as Guardian Angel, Tightly Bound, Worth Loving and Smile.
With Every River, Basson Laas delivers his most uplifting release to date, a song that reminds us that every dream worth pursuing requires patience, every setback offers growth, and every river, no matter how small its beginning, eventually finds its way to the sea.
